I get review requests for books and products regularly, but only a handful of emails catch my attention. This book is one of them! I am so excited to share it with you guys.
Take A Hike! is a children’s book, and a miniature donkey named Donkey-Donk is the main character. This book is the newest in the best-selling Donkey-Donk series. It’s a 36-page, softcover book with just under 300 words.
First Impression
The Donkey-Donk series tells her stories via photographs of Donk. Stories told via photos is what I do! I already liked the format even before I received the book. A picture is worth a thousand words, as they say.
The first time I saw the book, I was impressed with the cover photo of adorable Donk posing with Mount Washington in the backdrop and the quality of the publication. The glossy papers are perfect for the high-quality, vivid full-color 23 photos to captivate readers’ attention and prevent potential damages from the sticky fingers holding the book.
Review
What I like most about the Take A Hike! book (after the photos of Donk, of course) is that this story encourages young children to get off the couch and “take a hike” by showing them all the fun things Donk does and discovers.
I love the message very much because it saddens me to see that childhood obesity is a serious problem in the United States when it’s preventable. I also love the photos of Donk in action and her expressive nature. In the story, Donk hikes to the top of Mount Washington.
I am not sure if all donkeys are expressive like Donkey-Donk, but oh my gosh, her expressions are priceless! They made me laugh out loud at times, and Xena looked at me curiously. So, of course, I explained to her, but I don’t think she fully understood.
Also, I like that the story shares more about hiking than teaching just going to a mountain is hiking. It presents different types of terrain and things you might find in nature wonderfully in simple terms for young children. Even though I am much older than the intended age group, I enjoyed the book very much. Now I am wondering whom I can get these books as gifts.
Here are some facts about the book:
- Author: Ellen F. Feld, two-time Children’s Choices Author
- Ages: 4 and up
- Paperback
- Retail Price: $9.95 (available on Amazon)
Side Note
According to CDC, for children and adolescents aged 2-19 years:
- The prevalence of obesity was 18.5% and affected about 13.7 million children and adolescents.
- Obesity prevalence was 13.9% among 2- to 5-year-olds, 18.4% among 6- to 11-year-olds, and 20.6% among 12- to 19-year-olds.
Did you know once a child becomes obese, they are at great risk of being obese for life? It’s best to prevent it or get involved before it’s too late.
