I’ve tried a few different rope leashes so far from different makers and I haven’t found one I like enough to recommend to others. Mainly because I don’t find them sturdy.
When a company asks for an honest review, that shows they are confident about their product. I decided to give Flowfold Trailmate rope leash a try. This review is based on our normal use on the trails for two months.

Let’s talk about that vibrant color! I can’t trust colors I see on the computer screen because it can be deceiving due to lighting. So when the leash arrived and I found the color to be true to the color on the screen, I was happy. Orchid is beautiful rich pink and it looks better in person. It goes well with the pink harnesses we already have.
The leash is lightweight and configured tightly yet it’s flexible.
Brass snap hook with swivel worked as expected. Not too tight or loose. I wish it came in Nickel too. It’s just a personal preference.
Function – 5/5
Xena’s not a good swimmer so it made me anxious when we hiked next to a stream with a rapid current and she wanted to explore the shore. Trailmate was sturdy and it gave me a great sense of control. I stopped worrying about her safety. Back to exploring together…
This was my first 5′ long leash. To my surprise, I liked it better than my 6′ leashes. As you know we do most of our hikes off leash. I only use the leash when I need to have better control of Xena in difficult situations or when we are hiking near other hikers. The shorter leash was great for both situations. It took up less space in the pack and that’s always a plus!
The loop handle feels soft and comfortable in my hand.
Quality and Durability – 5/5
A little bit about Sterling Rope from the Flowfold website:
“For over 20 years, climbers and mountaineers have trusted Sterling to reach the peak. Every Sterling rope is proudly made in the USA and inspected by hand. This dog leash is made from reclaimed scraps of Sterling rope, America’s leading manufacturer of life-safety rope and cord.”
The brass hardware shows very minor wear and tear as expected. The rope itself and the black binding material still look new and sturdy after being thrown around all over the place while hiking and camping. The leash is durable to withstand our rugged outdoor adventures.
Overall – 4.8/5
Flowfold Trailmate is the best rope leash we’ve tried. It became our go-to leash for our outdoor adventures. It is constructed with high-quality materials and to top it off, the rope is reclaimed. We are giving the great quality rope a second chance to see the summit! Only the best for my sweet girl and this fits the bill. And that vibrant color!

Happy Hiking!
I am not a hiking person, but enjoy the outdoors and camping. What’s your recommendation on fire pit coffee pot, mine was forgotten at the last campsite.
Oh..that’s a bummer… I wish I could help there but camping is new to us. When we camped, my friend brought a coffee maker so I didn’t have to worry about it. This coffee maker works with propane.
So Xena is all sett if you decided to add climbing to her repertoire 😉
Haha, yes pretty much!
